GTA 6 YouTube thumbnail size: 1280×720
Why 305 HQ exports thumbnails at 1280×720, how safe-zone previews help on mobile feeds, and why wallpaper crops are the wrong substitute.
The size that survives the shelf
YouTube’s standard thumbnail canvas is 1280×720. Creator Studio exports PNG at that size so the file is ready for an existing upload’s thumbnail field. Smaller random crops look soft; taller wallpaper files get crushed on the shelf.
Safe-zone and mobile preview toggles exist because phones show a harsher crop than desktop home. Check whether the face and title still read before you push metadata.
Layout first, title stamp second
Pick a curated layout (free template, personalize photo layout, or your own screenshot as the base). Then the studio stamps the headline onto the 1280×720 frame so you can still tweak wording after the picture is chosen.
That split matters when a hard-data title needs a number change at the last minute. Regenerating the whole image for a digit is wasteful; editing the stamped line is the point.
What not to use instead
Phone wallpapers (3:4) and desktop wallpapers (16:9 without title treatment) are different products on /wallpapers. Map screenshots from /map rarely leave room for a readable title.
Push to YouTube updates an existing video’s thumbnail — it does not create a new upload. Have the video ID ready before you connect.
