GTA 6 Standard vs Ultimate Edition: What You Get and Which to Pre-Order
Rockstar has announced two editions of Grand Theft Auto VI, a physical version that is a download code only, and a pre-order bonus pack with a deadline. This guide explains what each edition includes, how the pre-order bonus works, how upgrading later works, and what Rockstar has not said yet. Every fact is tied to a Rockstar or Take-Two page.
305 HQ is a fan-made toolkit. It is not affiliated with Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive, and it does not sell the game.
Quick answer
- Two editions are announced: Standard and Ultimate.
- Rockstar's pre-order announcement lists US prices of $79.99 (Standard) and $99.99 (Ultimate). Prices in other countries are set on each store, so check your own PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store.
- Anyone who pre-orders or buys either edition before November 20, 2026 gets the Vintage Vice City Pack. Digital orders also get one month of GTA+.
- You can start with Standard and buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade later, as a digital add-on.
- The boxed version has no disc. It holds a download code. There is no boxed Ultimate Edition.
- Pre-load starts November 12 at local midnight. The game releases November 19, 2026.
Standard Edition vs Ultimate Edition
Rockstar's support page describes the Standard Edition as the game itself. The Ultimate Edition is the game plus the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, a set of extra items and locations.
| Standard Edition | Ultimate Edition | |
|---|---|---|
| Game | Yes | Yes |
| Ultimate Edition Upgrade content | Not included, can be bought later | Included |
| US price in the pre-order announcement | $79.99 | $99.99 |
| Digital | Yes | Yes |
| Physical (download code, no disc) | Yes | No |
| Vintage Vice City Pack (before Nov 20) | Yes | Yes |
| One month of GTA+ (digital pre-orders) | Yes | Yes |
Rockstar describes the Ultimate Edition extras as "threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter." So they are not all available from the first mission.
What the Ultimate Edition adds
Rockstar's support page lists these items:
- '95 Grotti Cheetah
- Hawk & Little Morgan Revolvers
- Personalized Weapon Variants
- Vice City Styles
- Jason's Safehouse Vehicles
- Ganado Retro Build
- Rideout Customs Mod Shop
- Sara's Unisex Salon
- Shitzu Squalo
- Stock 305 Clothing Store
- '67 Vapid Dominator Buggy and Garage
- Electric Fang Tattoo Parlor
- One-Eyed Willie's Mod Shop
- Goodtime Gear
- PTT Youngin$ Compound
- Classic Car Collection
The PlayStation Store listing for the upgrade groups some of these as special destinations that are "only open for business with the Ultimate Edition": Rideout Customs, Sara's Unisex Salon, Stock 305, Electric Fang Tattoo and One-Eyed Willie's. It also says the upgrade needs the base game, which is sold separately.
In plain terms, the Ultimate Edition is cosmetic and customization content plus a few extra activities and vehicles. Rockstar has not said it changes the main story, and it has not described any gameplay advantage beyond the items above.
The Vintage Vice City Pack
All pre-orders and purchases before November 20, 2026 include the Vintage Vice City Pack, on either edition, digital or physical. Rockstar's support page lists:
- '55 Vapid Stanier Sedan and Garage
- Outfits and Hairstyles
- Exclusive Weapon Pattern
Digital pre-orders and purchases of either edition also include one month of GTA+. The physical version's code includes the Vintage Vice City Pack, and the support page does not list GTA+ for physical pre-orders.
The deadline matters. The announcement says "before November 20, 2026". The PlayStation Store listing words it as a purchase by 23:59:59 on November 19, 2026. Store clocks and time zones can differ, so do not leave this to the last minute.
Digital or physical?
Rockstar's support page says the physical version contains a download code, and "a disc will not be included in the box." It is expected to be available for shipping and pickup from retailers starting November 12, and codes can be used as soon as you receive them to pre-load on November 12.
That changes the usual physical-versus-digital trade-off:
- A box gives you something to gift or hold, but you still download the game.
- The physical version is only offered for the Standard Edition. If you want Ultimate at launch on the first day, buy it digitally, or buy the box and add the Ultimate Edition Upgrade after redeeming the code.
- Digital pre-orders get one month of GTA+ per the announcement. The support page lists it only under digital.
- Rockstar notes region rules for codes. A code has to match the region of your platform account, and Rockstar recommends buying from a retailer in the country of your platform account. On PlayStation, codes are grouped by region. Xbox codes are not region-locked.
Can you upgrade later?
Yes. Rockstar says the Ultimate Edition Upgrade will be available for Standard Edition owners to purchase separately at any time. You buy it as a digital add-on on the PlayStation or Microsoft store. Physical buyers can upgrade after their digital download code has been redeemed.
So the choice is not locked in. If you are unsure, the Standard Edition keeps the option open. What Rockstar has not published is the price of the Ultimate Edition Upgrade on its own, so you cannot yet work out whether buying Ultimate later costs more than buying it now.
Pre-load and release date
Digital pre-orders start pre-loading on November 12 at local midnight, so you can play at launch on November 19, 2026. For the time zone side of launch day, see our GTA 6 release time guide.
Where to buy
Rockstar's announcement says the game will be at the PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store, the Rockstar Games Store, and global retailers and storefronts. Platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Not confirmed yet
- The price of the Ultimate Edition Upgrade as a separate purchase.
- Prices in each country. The $79.99 and $99.99 figures are the US prices in Rockstar's announcement. Check your local store.
- The exact hour the game unlocks on launch day.
- A PC version. Rockstar has not announced one.
- Whether any other retailer-exclusive bonuses exist. Rockstar's pages list none.
Which should you pre-order?
- Choose Standard if you want to spend the least now, you are not sure you will like the extra cosmetics and activities, or you want a boxed code to gift. You can add the upgrade later.
- Choose Ultimate if you want its listed extras and are buying digitally. Rockstar says new items are uncovered behind each chapter, so do not expect every bonus immediately.
- Either way, buy before November 20 for the Vintage Vice City Pack.
